Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Sports INC. has started the Istanbul Children’s Marathon, Turkey’s largest children’s marathon in May 10, 2015, which is both the “Mother’s Day” and “World Athletics Day”. In the very first Istanbul Children’s Marathon organized in the Maltepe Coast City Park, children were welcomed with slogans such as “Welcome Champion”, “Participation Means Winning”, and “Give Your Mom Your First Medal For the Mother’s Day”.
Participated by 7000 children between the ages of 0-14 in its first year, the activity aimed at imbuing them with a “Sense of Marathon” and “Culture of Sports”, rather than racing them. Children age groups of 0-3, 4-5, and 6-7 have completed the predetermined laps with their parents. Age groups of 8-9, 10-11, and 12-14 have had the pleasure of becoming champions on their own. Furthermore, to raise awareness children with the Down syndrome have run the marathon and felt the joy of earning medals. The kids who completed the marathon were given envelopes with gift coupons from the sponsors in them, and this way they not only enjoyed being champions, they also had the pleasure to get gifts by visiting sponsor stands one after another.
On Mother’s Day, May 8, 2016, the children’s marathon, named after the Sponsor “Didi”, was organized for the second time in Maltepe Coast City Park. Children who participated in the Didi 2nd Istanbul Children’s Marathon were welcomed with the slogan, “May Them Run And Grow”.
The number of registered children went up to 10.000 between the ages of 0-15 in its second year, compared to the 7000 registers in the first year. The aim of the activity was again to encourage a “Sense of Marathon” and “Culture of Sports” rather than having them race each other.
At Didi 2nd Istanbul Children’s Marathon, where the 14-15 age group was added, the kids had so much fun running in this age group since their ranking was going to be measured through electronic timing chips.
Additionally, in order to raise awareness Didi 2nd Istanbul Children’s Marathon hosted children with Down syndrome, as well as those with Autism, and they also enjoyed running and wining medals. With Sealife and Kidzania as the Main Sponsors, the Children’s Marathon also had Salcano and Pilsan as the Supply Sponsors.
On the day of the activity, the area was full of various fun activities and play areas for all age groups, and all the children and their parents had an unforgettable day ending it with Ceza concert.
